Many people think they know where the Las Vegas Strip begins and ends. This popular destination is often said to stretch from just south of Russell Road, where the iconic ‘Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas’ sign is located, up to the STRAT, the towering casino that looms prominently in the skyline. However, the reality is far less clear-cut.

However, this perception is not entirely accurate since there is no official designation for where the Las Vegas Strip truly constitutes. It’s rather a colloquial term that describes a subjective stretch of Las Vegas Boulevard.

Border Disputes

The definition of the Las Vegas Strip is a topic that can lead to disagreements. Depending on whom you consult, perspectives differ on whether the Strip encroaches into the 0.2 miles of Las Vegas city territory that Las Vegas Boulevard crosses from Sahara Avenue northward toward the STRAT.

Not surprisingly, the STRAT claims that it fully falls within the Strip, a sentiment echoed by many travel guides, newspapers, and websites that have an interest in advertising for the casino. The city of Las Vegas echoes this sentiment as well. In 2020, it introduced the Gateway Arches over Las Vegas Boulevard adjacent to the STRAT, ostensibly marking the city limits.

Yet, the city has previously installed another Welcome to Downtown Las Vegas sign at Sahara Avenue back in 2002, marking the true commencement of the city (which incidentally faced destruction in a vehicular accident in 2016). Therefore, the city cannot legally assert its claim to any part of the Strip due to the historical background of its establishment.

Strip Search

A significant historical aspect of the Strip’s origin can be traced back to 1950 when a number of casino operators formed an unincorporated township called Paradise, primarily to evade taxes while maintaining a Las Vegas address. This tactic appears to remain in practice today.

In the following year, the smaller township of Winchester also adopted similar practices as Las Vegas Boulevard cuts through it from the Wynn to the Sahara.

Sign of the Times

The iconic WTFLV sign was erected in 1959, designed by artist Betty Willis and installed north of McCarran Field. Interestingly, at a typical Las Vegas Review-Journal article from 1959, the Western Neon Company won the $4,000 bid by proposing the wording as “Welcome to the Fabulous Las Vegas Strip.” This modification would have enhanced the sign’s accuracy, considering the actual city extends approximately 4.2 miles to the north.

The decision was reversed, preferring the simpler “Welcome to Las Vegas,” causing ongoing confusion for visitors attempting to locate the true boundaries of the Strip.

Future Developments and Boundaries

Currently, the location of the WTFLV sign was designated as the southernmost limit for casino expansion at that time. Beyond it, vast stretches of desert were still untouched. However, the sign is subject to relocation at any point to accommodate future developments, potentially moving four miles south of its current position.

By 2026, development plans are already in motion for a $3 billion arena capable of hosting NBA games, situated on 25 acres near the intersection of I-15 and Blue Diamond Road. There are predictions that the Strip could simultaneously see expansions, possibly tripling its overall size toward the M Resort at Las Vegas Boulevard South and St. Rose Parkway.

As construction continues southward—with the Allegiant Stadium initiating this trend—the Strip is on an inevitable journey of transformation.
